Our audio editing services are divided into “Essential” and “Advanced,” depending on your needs, preferences and budget.
Essential delivers the fundamentals: making sure you and your guests are in sync, background noise is removed,¹ and dialogue is cleaned up and smooth. Those restarts, stumbles, stutters, crutch words and long, awkward pauses will be edited out as much as possible,² for a finished result that is purpose-designed for audio (in audio-only content, we lose visual cues, body language and non-verbal communication. Thus we make different editing choices with audio-only than we do with video).
Essential then gives you a file with noise reduction applied, mixing and mastering to make sure your levels are equal and standardized. So your listener won’t be reaching for the volume knob every time the person speaking changes, or when your in-house ad comes in.
And if you give us specific edit requests, with a time stamp (“Please remove the sentence starting at 4:54, ‘That reminds me of the time when…’ up to the line, “… but it didn’t really matter.’”), we can quickly get that removed and cleaned up, like it never existed!
¹ This requires each speaker to be recorded on a separate audio track. Multiple speakers on the same track greatly reduces our editing options. We highly recommend that you set your recording software to “record separate audio for each speaker,” or the equivalent setting. ² Why “as much as possible?” In our experience, not every single “uhm” and “you know” should be removed. Often, it’s a case of too jarring a cut, a crutch word that blends too quickly into another word, or an expression that demonstrates personality or emphasis. This is part of our philosophy of highlighting the human experience, natural conversation style and your own character. We do just enough editing, not too much.
Advanced goes an extra step in production, particularly when it comes to content editing. For starters, we make sure that any non-speakers are muted (as long as separate tracks are provided), to eliminate those coughs and annoying background noise.
And while we’re likely not experts on your topic and niche, we can tell where logical arguments and sentences break down, and if possible, we’ll reconstruct them to make more sense. Often, this is simply a question of grammar corrections: we can move words around and delete superfluous words so that you and your guests come across clearer and more concise.
And if we don’t know whether to keep or cut a section, we’ll ask! Advanced edits come with free revisions, and with our customer dashboard we can easily communicate and leave messages and instructions (which can also be sent as email alerts).
Advanced also gives you the option of spicing up your episode with music and sound effects. You can upload your previously-purchased royalty-free music to our dashboard, and either give us time stamps for where you’d like it inserted, or let us use our instinct and experience to find the best moment!
Lastly, with Advanced, we can upload your finished .mp3 file to your podcast host, and even schedule it for you, if you provide the relevant info. Certain podcast hosts allow “team members” to have shared access to a show’s account, making the process even simpler.
